2009
Kasteel van Gaasbeek, Castle grounds, Lennik, Ten… slotte… het beeld
coloured textile, 0.80 m x 130 m (30 + 100 m)
In the woods, two figures stand wrapped from shoulder to waist in a 130-metre-long piece of coloured cloth, tied around a tree. The tree holds them upright, enabling them to stand together over time and offering care without longing or expectation.
Eventually, the two figures leave in different forms, each having been relieved of a dozen metres of cloth and having cleared a path back to the beginning. During this slow unravelling, the audience becomes enclosed within the textile, physically and perceptually drawn into the process.
One performer responds by singing, while the other recites ‘I like to be a tree’. A gentle melody enters the space repeatedly, weaving voice, text and presence together.
