Hedge

Monumental, Bornem, Artchitecture, Tom Peeters
hornbeam, banner and wood, 65 m (contour) x 4.5 m (high)
Wooden stakes have been erected around a solitary hornbeam, placed on cobbles on one side and on grass on the other. This arrangement transforms the hornbeam, which is normally used as a kind of fence, into an autonomous element. Horizontal shelves connect the piles at the top and at a height of 2.5 metres, providing stability on both sides. The result is an open-air gallery without a roof.
The banner surrounding the hornbeam contributes to the overall composition. On one side, the banner is white, deliberately contrasting with its surroundings. On the other side, the banner is predominantly green, blending in and absorbing the surroundings.
An entrance is provided along the structure, allowing visitors to enter and walk around the hedge. Within the white section, the visitor is shielded and perceives the environment diffusely. In the green section, the visitor is visible and gains a clear understanding of the environment.
The construction of this installation is gradual, following the natural irregularities of the hornbeam and the ground.
