Bush

June – July 2001

presentation of the laureates’ works, H.I.S.K., Antwerp

laurel-cherry, metal, wood and cotton, 5.6 x 5.5 x 7.4 m

In this installation a single bush, carefully selected from the randomly growing bushes along the walls, is placed in a wooden box. The dimensions of the box are carefully chosen to provide a full view of the bush. However, a small vertical opening challenges the notion of accessibility to the enclosed space.

The walls of the box are painted a soft, pale grey-lilac, like a serene backdrop for the bush. A grey carpet covers the floor, adding a touch of texture and grounding the composition. The roof, made from a transparent sheet of corrugated plastic, allows natural light to enter the space, while a stretched cotton fabric filters the light to create a soft and diffused ambience.

Technical advice from Bert Ghysels, who collaborated on the realisation of the project, with the support of Joëlle Wilssens, Hans Thielman and Ann Claeyé
